The seeds of Ajwain have been popularly used in India by many households in order to treat upset stomach, and used in the preparation of various food items to prevent stomach related issues. The scientific nomenclature name of the ajwan is Trachyspermum ammi (other: Trachyspermum copticum, and Carum copticum). The Ajwain essential oil is extracted from the Ajwain seeds. The color of the Ajwain oil can vary from orange to red, and the oil gives a pungent thyme odor.
According to the composition of the oil, the major compounds present in the oil are thymol, beta-pinene, gamma-terpinene, and p-cymene. Whereas, there are some other compounds that can be found in the ajowan oil in minor percentage, such as alpha-thujene, alpha-pinene, beta-myrcene, terpinene-4-ol, carvacrol, and limonene. The oil contains antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. The oil stops free radical, and removes the signs of aging. There are studies that have proven that the Ajwain oil reduces the secretion of nitric acid in the body, and thus act as a great anti-inflammatory agent.
Another study which was conducted in the year 1988, shown that Ajwain oil relaxes the windpipe, and allows more oxygen to get into the lungs. It can be very helpful in the treatment of respiratory diseases like cold, cough, respiratory infection, sinus congestion, etc. The oil can kill 15 types of different bacteria that are harmful to our body, and the compounds like beta-pinene, and thymol present in the oil makes it a great ointment for the treatment of fungal infections (including yeast, molds, etc.). You can use the Ajwain oil as an insect repellant too.
